Skipper Hannu Hildén (1931-2000) served
as captain of s/s Suomi from 1977, when he bought the ship, right up until 1992, when he became captain of m/s Suomen Suvi, a vessel built specifically for operation on the recently completed Keitele-Päijänne canal. In poor condition when purchased by Hannu Hildén, s/s Suomi gained a new lease of life which also coincided with the start of a recovery in shipping traffic on Lake Päijänne. Thanks to his unyielding efforts the route between Lahti and Jyväskylä could be preserved and a ”new route”, between Lahti and Heinola, opened 1980. And also new route from Jyväskylä to Keitele Canal just at once the Canal was opened 1993.
